What Makes a Good Video Ad?
A good video ad does one thing: it gets the right person to take action.
Not views. Not compliments. Not “brand awareness” with no measurable outcome. If the goal is leads or sales, the ad should be judged by whether it helps produce exactly that. Production quality matters, but a beautiful video with a weak message is still a weak ad.
A business can spend tens of thousands of dollars on cameras, lighting, locations, actors, and editing and still end up with an ad that does very little.
Here is what actually matters when creating a video ad that converts.
1. Get the Right Person’s Attention with a Hook
Your first job is to stop the right person from scrolling, and the easiest way to do that is through relevance. Call out:
Who the ad is for
A problem they have
An outcome they want
Something they are already thinking about
Weak: “Welcome to ABC Renovations. We’ve been serving Montreal for 15 years.”
Better: “Planning a major home renovation in Montreal? Here are three mistakes that can cost you thousands of dollars.”
The second hook works because the right homeowner immediately knows the video is for them. You do not need everyone’s attention—you only need the attention of the people most likely to buy.
2. Make the Problem Matter. Talk About Their Pain Points.
People take action when the cost of staying where they are becomes greater than the cost of changing. Your ad should make the problem of your target audience clear. What is the prospect trying to avoid?
Losing money
Wasting time
Hiring the wrong company
Getting poor results
Making an expensive mistake
Staying stuck
Do not manufacture fear. Simply show that you understand the problem better than your competitors do. The more accurately you describe the customer’s situation, the more likely they are to believe you understand how to solve it.
3. Show Them the Desired Outcome
Customers do not buy services because they want services; they buy outcomes.
Someone hiring a contractor does not want “renovation services.” They want a beautiful home without delays, surprise costs, or unreliable trades. Someone hiring a video production company does not want a camera crew. They want better marketing, stronger credibility, more attention, or more customers. Connect what you sell to what the customer actually wants.
4. Give Them a Strong Offer
A good video cannot rescue a bad offer. If people understand your service but still do not want it, better editing probably will not fix the problem. Your offer should make the customer think, “This seems worth doing.”
A strong offer increases perceived value while reducing perceived risk. That might mean offering:
A clear deliverable
A compelling guarantee
A free consultation
A useful bonus
A fast turnaround
A clear process
The removal of a common risk or objection
You do not necessarily need a discount. You just need a reason for them to choose you.
5. Give Them a Reason to Believe You
Claims are cheap, but proof is strong. Instead of just saying, “We create high-performing video campaigns,” show them:
Customer testimonials
Case studies
Tangible results
Reviews
Before-and-after examples
Recognizable clients
Real projects
If you can demonstrate that you have already created the outcome the prospect wants, selling becomes easier. The stronger the claim, the stronger the proof should be.
6. Remove Objections
Before someone buys, they usually have unanswered questions. Will this work for me? How much does it cost? How long will it take? What happens if it does not work? Why should I choose this company?
Your ads do not need to answer every possible objection, but they should address the biggest reasons someone might hesitate. Good advertising makes saying "yes" feel easier.
7. Tell Them What to Do Next
Do not make people guess.
If you want them to book a call, say: Book a call.
If you want them to request a quote, say: Request a quote.
If you want them to visit a landing page, tell them why they should visit it.
One ad should generally have one primary action. The more decisions you give people, the easier it becomes for them to do nothing.
8. Make the Creative Support the Message
This is where production comes in. Lighting, cinematography, sound, editing, music, graphics, and animation can make an advertisement much more effective. But remember, they are tools. Their job is to make the message:
Easier to understand
More credible
More engaging
More memorable
They should not become the message. A simple talking-head video with a strong offer can outperform an expensive commercial with no clear reason to buy. At the same time, weak production can hurt trust. The right level of production depends entirely on the audience, platform, product, and brand.
9. Put the Ad in Front of the Right People
An ad that nobody sees cannot work, and an ad shown to the wrong audience also cannot work. This is why production and distribution should not be treated as completely separate decisions.
For many businesses—especially B2B companies and local businesses—the potential audience is relatively small. You cannot depend on organic reach or hope that every video becomes viral. Paid advertising allows you to repeatedly reach the people most likely to become customers. The creative gets attention, and the targeting gets that creative in front of the right people. You need both.
10. Test More Than One Ad
Do not assume your first creative is the winner. The market decides. Test different:
Hooks
Offers
Angles
Testimonials
Formats
Calls to action
One hook may fail while another version of the exact same offer works. That does not necessarily mean the campaign was bad; it means you learned something. The goal is not to create one “perfect” advertisement. The goal is to create enough good advertisements to discover what the market responds to.
The Bottom Line: What Makes a Good Video Ad?
Everything else is secondary to these core elements. A good video ad has:
The right audience.
A strong hook.
A problem worth solving.
A desirable outcome.
A compelling offer.
Proof.
A clear call to action.
Creative that supports the message.
Effective distribution.
A video ad does not need to win an award. It just needs to make the right customer care enough to take the next step.
